Taiyo Tsue “Picking Up Sand”
I visited Taiyo Tsue’s solo exhibition. The venue is Gallery STAGE-1.
Sixteen monochrome works were on display.
The titles consist only of numbers (arranged in order of creation), making it difficult to tell at first glance what is depicted.
After viewing them for a while, one realizes that these depict wartime scenes.
I had the chance to speak with Tsue, who was present at the gallery. He mentioned that the works in this exhibition were created through meticulous research.
Surrounded by the works displayed on all four sides of the gallery, I felt as though I was losing my sense of the era I now live in.
The creative approach traces back through his own family lineage, yet I sensed an atmosphere that overlays the temporality of the Pacific War era onto the present day.
