Art Collector Visits
This series visits the homes of art collectors to view their collections.
For our third installment, we visit Kohei Yamada, who is also active as a painter.
Kohei Yamada is an artist who creates paintings that draw on art history, design, and subculture.
In addition to exhibiting at Art Fair Tokyo 2019, he has been active through solo and group exhibitions.
Kohei Yamada’s home is located in a residential complex in the western part of Tokyo.

Kohei Yamada’s works are the kind that are quickly picked up by collectors — a so-called sold-out artist.
As a painter pursuing meticulous expression, his production requires a great deal of time.
Dedicating most of his time to creating art, Yamada leads a stoic life, rarely going out.
His passion for art also runs remarkably high — he collects a wide range of art-related books, exhibition catalogues, and artists’ monographs, which line his wall-to-wall bookshelves densely.

Although the apartment is a 1LDK layout, even after accounting for the bookshelves and atelier space, there is still a generous floor area.
It gives the impression of being amply spacious for a single occupant.

The placement of the collected works was also distinctive. They are arranged in positions where his gaze naturally falls during production.

During our visit, he pulled out art-related books one after another from his shelves and explained them.
He truly loves art and was overflowing with inexhaustible energy for it.
When we picked up one of his collected works and asked, “What makes this piece interesting?”, he could articulate a clear answer — a testimony to the artistic path and love of art he has cultivated.
Collector Kohei Yamada’s love of art is filled with a consistent energy that connects seamlessly to Kohei Yamada the artist, making for a most pleasant interview.
