The Hyperrealism Invasion: Selected Works from the Hoki Museum
Realist painting — the art of rendering its subject with utter fidelity — is now enjoying what can only be called a boom.
Each artist may complete only a handful of works per year, spending months in patient dialogue with the canvas. The finished pieces are freighted with each painter’s own vision, and beyond their minute detail they carry a presence that no photograph or film could ever match.
This exhibition brings together seventy select highlights from the collection of the Hoki Museum — the institution known as “the temple of realist painting” — presenting the finest works by today’s leading realist painters under one roof. Through this rich variety of works by singularly gifted artists, visitors will be able to savour the full pleasures of realist painting.

What is the Hoki Museum?
The Hoki Museum opened on November 3, 2010 in Midori Ward, Chiba City, as one of the few museums in the world dedicated exclusively to realist painting.
Its holdings comprise approximately 480 realist paintings assembled by Masao Hoki.
Fronting the lush greenery of Showa no Mori, Chiba City’s largest park, the museum’s corridor-style gallery — one floor above ground and two below, running some 500 metres in total — offers year-round viewing of about 140 masterworks of realism by roughly forty contemporary painters, including Sosuke Morimoto, Hiroshi Noda, and Tadahiko Nakayama. Part of the structure is cantilevered on a steel frame so that it floats in mid-air, with galleries that open onto sweeping views of the forest. On the second basement level, the museum presents “My Signature Works,” a display of paintings of size 100 or larger — many created specifically for the Hoki Museum.

Selected Works on View

“The Hyperrealism Invasion: Selected Works from the Hoki Museum” promises an encounter with the sheer power of realist painting — an experience no reproduction can convey.
We look forward to it with great anticipation.
