Teppei Soutome “our time”
We visited Teppei Soutome’s solo exhibition “our time” at AOYAMA|MEGURO, a gallery in Naka-Meguro.
Front Room
The sunlit front room, which faces the street, was hung with works unified in a monochromatic palette.
All of the works are acrylic on panel, yet the black shows a subtly varied texture.
Looking closely at the paint surface, we could see that beneath the black lies a ground painted in a different color for each work (blue, yellow, red, and so on); the black is layered over it and the surface is then scraped as a final step. Viewed from the side, the colors bleeding out from beneath were clearly visible.
Back Room
The back room displayed the 2011 large-scale work “Girls,” which had been adapted for a jacket by the musical artist KIRINJI.
Also on view was the original painting “Our Time #1,” which has been reproduced as a wall clock.
The exquisitely tuned color combinations, the pared-down motifs, and the beautifully flat paint surface set the pulse racing.
The exhibition is part of a project that unfolds simultaneously at two other venues as well, each with its own selection and configuration of works.
