Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School Diploma Show
We visited the graduation and diploma show at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
Yurina Okada’s works stayed with us, so we would like to introduce them here.
Yurina Okada is an artist who also showed at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2018, where she presented photographic works and drew attention by winning the Shigeo Goto Prize.

Yurina Okada
Where her works at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2018 were photographic, in this diploma show she presented paintings based on photography.

For these works, I chose motif photographs while keeping in mind the balance of the surface image of the piece.
The works are grounded in singularity and chance — factors I cannot control — and if the timing of the transfer is off, everything is ruined.
I feel that the collision between tension and image transforms into the material substance we call the “crack.”— From a comment by Yurina Okada

Okada makes paintings by taking monochrome photographs of people and landscapes and, through a special technique, causing them to crack. The results wander somewhere between photography and painting, between the real and the fictive.
