Toru Ishii “Collage and Staining”
We visited Toru Ishii’s solo exhibition “Collage and Staining.”
The venue was COURTYARD HIROO.
COURTYARD HIROO is a clean, airy space anchored by white walls, and its quiet setting made it possible to take in the art at a leisurely pace.
As the title suggests, this exhibition features works produced through the interplay of collage and the staining technique (bleeding).
On view were works drawing on imagery from the American magazine “TIME,” rendered by Toru Ishii using the traditional Japanese technique of itome-yuzen dyeing. Every piece is titled “Mapping,” reflecting the artist’s intent to map contemporary society in sculptural and iconographic terms.
Alongside the show, art collector Hiroshi Kamei (@ishitsubute) offered his audio-guide project “KIITEMIRU” free of charge.
“KIITEMIRU” is a service anyone can use for free with just a smartphone.
Because it approaches the works and the artist’s intentions from a variety of angles through interviews, it deepens viewers’ understanding and makes the whole experience of viewing all the richer.
