Yasumasa Morimura: EGO OBSCURA TOKYO 2020 – In the Wilderness of Nippon

I visited Yasumasa Morimura’s solo exhibition “EGO OBSCURA TOKYO 2020 – In the Wilderness of Nippon.”
The venue is Hara Museum of Contemporary Art.

Yasumasa Morimura is known for his self-portrait works in which he transforms himself into figures from masterpiece paintings, characters from films, and historical personages. Through skilled makeup and costuming, he embodies a wide range of figures across eras, races, and genders, adding his own interpretation of the originals and their backgrounds through his production.

The approximately 50-minute video work “EGO OBSCURA” deepens one’s understanding of this exhibition.
The show was quintessentially Morimura in its strong message asking, “What is ‘the wandering self of Japan’?”
