Yusuke Asai “Gimme Something to Eat”
I visited Yusuke Asai’s solo exhibition “Gimme Something to Eat” at ANOMALY.
When you step off the elevator, you are greeted by his signature mud paintings.
“Wild Star” is painted using deer blood, and it can be exchanged with the central section of the large work “That Island Still Had No Words,” allowing viewers to enjoy swapping the two.

A First Challenge with Oil Paint
This exhibition featured the first-ever oil paintings by Yusuke Asai.
Asai is known for his practice of using naturally derived materials, beginning with mud paintings.
A visit to the studio of painter Masato Kobayashi sparked a chain of connections — his work using deer blood, his activities at Tama Art University, and various other recent endeavors all converged, leading him to try oil paints.
Some of the oil paints used in these works were passed on to Asai by Masato Kobayashi. Asai plans to continue producing oil paintings going forward.
