Yukimasa Ida’s First Japanese Monograph “Crystallization”
“Crystallization,” a monograph by Yukimasa Ida — a young contemporary artist drawing attention at home and abroad — was published by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. *His first monograph published in Japan.

Contents of the Monograph
The main concept Yukimasa Ida has consistently pursued in his work is “ichigo ichie” — one time, one meeting.
“I want to hold on to the ‘now’ that will never come again — the events I encounter as I live — through my own filter,” Ida says. The book introduces his wide-ranging practice, from portraiture and abstract painting to sculpture, and includes an unpublished large-scale work over 10 meters long, “Miniature Garden — A Creative Allegory,” as a fold-out.
Around 150 works are featured across a total of 284 pages.
A few excerpts are shown below.

200-Copy Special Edition
Alongside the regular edition, a special edition limited to 200 copies has also been prepared.
The special edition is a striking monograph whose cover is a section of a 2.9 × 6.4-meter oil painting created for the occasion by Yukimasa Ida himself. The painting is divided into 200 pieces, each of which is bound directly as a cover — so the work itself becomes the book.

In addition to the Ida oil painting on the cover, each special edition also comes with a print titled “Portrait” (10 colors, 20 editions each), produced in cooperation with Ricoh Company, Ltd., and a poster showing the cover painting in its entirety — a compelling set.
The price is a substantial 300,000 yen (before tax). That’s 330,000 yen including tax.
Details will be released on a dedicated site from May 29, 2020, and applications to the lottery will open from 10:00 a.m. on June 2.

Launch Exhibition
To mark the release of “Crystallization,” an exhibition displaying all 200 copies of the special edition will be held at Ginza Tsutaya Books / GINZA ATRIUM.

The four-week run coincides with the June 2 release and continues through June 30, 2020.
*Dates may change due to venue closures resulting from an extended state of emergency, or other unavoidable circumstances.
Wrap-up
A must-watch monograph that lets you enjoy in generous large-format the practice of Ida — now 30, having climbed to stardom in his twenties — over the past decade.
The launch exhibition is a highlight too. I’m looking forward to it.
