Yukimasa Ida’s First Domestic Book “Crystallization”

“Crystallization,” a monograph by Yukimasa Ida — the young contemporary artist drawing attention both in Japan and abroad — was published by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha on Tuesday, June 2, 2020. *His first monograph published in Japan.

Special Edition Limited to 200 Copies

Alongside the standard edition, a special edition limited to 200 copies has been produced. In this special edition, a portion of a 2.9 × 6.4 meter oil painting Yukimasa Ida created for the occasion serves as the cover — a striking design.

The painting is divided into 200 pieces, and each piece is bound as the cover of a copy — a specification in which the artwork itself literally becomes a book.

Publication Commemorative Exhibition

To commemorate the publication of this monograph “Crystallization,” an exhibition was held at GINZA ATRIUM in Ginza Tsutaya Books, presenting all 200 copies of the special edition lined up side by side.

This is the first and last opportunity to see all 200 copies of the special edition displayed together.

Portrait

We also took note of another work, “Portrait” (10 colors × 20 editions each), included in the special edition.

It is a print work produced by RICOH’s art brand “StareReap,” and we were struck by a quality that faithfully reproduces the original piece.

The meticulous detail comes from RICOH’s technology called “StareReap 2.5.”

StareReap 2.5 is a technique developed on RICOH’s proprietary technology — a three-dimensional printmaking technology that can precisely express the layered depth of paint, tonality, and material texture of the artwork.

A fidelity that could easily be mistaken for the original.
