From September 17 to 21, 2020, the art fair “artTNZ produced by AFT with APCA” (hereafter “artTNZ”) will be held at Tennoz, Tokyo’s art-and-waterfront district.
The venue is Warehouse Terrada’s newly opened art complex, TERRADA ART COMPLEX II.
artTNZ will take place across two floors.
Twenty-eight galleries occupy the “A Section” on the third floor, and fourteen the “T Section” on the fourth — each condensing the distinct worldview of its gallery into a single space.
Third Floor
The A Section (3F), organized by the Association of the Promotion of Contemporary Art, Japan, brings together roughly 100 artists from 28 galleries — from internationally acclaimed names to the most exciting young talent working today. A defining feature is the strong presence of artists working outside Tokyo.
From “YOD Gallery,” a silkscreen print from Barakei (Ordeal by Roses) — the celebrated collaboration in which Japan’s leading photographer Eikoh Hosoe photographed Yukio Mishima with contributions from the multi-disciplinary creator Tadanori Yokoo — is set to be shown.
From “STANDING PINE” comes Noritoshi Hirakawa, the New York-based artist who continues to release work of sharp cultural and social critique across a wide range of media — photography, film, performance and more.
From “MEM,” Natsuko Tanihara, who paints an alternate human world using her distinctive technique of layering oil paint with sequins, glitter and other materials on a black or red velvet support.

From “the three konohana,” Takumi Kato — an artist whose practice starts from tempera and fresco and moves in parallel with painting-material research linked to the present day, producing paintings that draw on a wide range of materials and techniques. Both Kato and Tanihara have been shown at “VOCA.”
And from “COHJU contemporary art” comes Mio Yamato, who, by repeating the same pattern again and again, generates an organic surface in which order and disorder overlap on the canvas — and who last year held a solo exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.
From “gallery21yo-j” comes Asami Shoji, who paints images resembling uneasy fables in order to interrogate the relationship between narrative and the body that encounters it, and who took the Grand Prix at last year’s “FACE 2019” (Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Art Award). It is a lineup of artists worth watching closely.
Among the international artists, don’t miss the wild yet delicate animal sculptures — made in coarse clay — by the British artist Stephanie Quayle at “Gallery 38.”
Fourth Floor
In the T Section on 4F, organized by Art Tokyo Association, a diverse array of works from around the world will be presented, crossing borders.
From “GALLERY TARGET” comes the Barcelona-based painter Adriana Oliver. Influenced by Pop Art, she is known for her bold, colorful depictions of figures that evoke the atmosphere of everyday life in the 1950s and 60s.
“104GALERIE” presents two Romanian artists: Teodora Axente, who enjoys a strong international reputation, and Alin Bozbiciu, who studied under one of the few Romanian artists connected to the Pop Art scene. Paintings by both will be shown.
In addition, “Sho+1” will (tentatively) present the debut works of a new pencil artist who works only in monochrome — originally slated to be introduced at Art Fair Tokyo 2020.
Also, “Tomio Koyama Gallery” is scheduled to present Tom Sachs — the New York-based artist known for works inspired by icons of modernism and design.

To ensure a relaxed environment for viewing and purchasing work, the fair operates on a fully reserved basis with a capped attendance. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, entry will be handled through a contactless facial-recognition system.
