AICON “Other Shades”
I visited AICON’s solo exhibition “Other Shades.”
The venue is CLASS, a gallery in Omotesando.
AICON graduated from the oil painting course at Kyoto Seika University, worked as a graphic designer, and now shows and produces work as an artist.
The exhibition centers on monochrome silkscreen works.

The works have a distinct character: the images are constructed largely from aggregations of lines. A line as a one-dimensional element gathers into a two-dimensional image, but stepping back from an AICON work turns the experience into a three-dimensional one.
The image that emerges when viewed from a distance is not transferred imagery but a delicate form built entirely from black lines. Though composed of lines alone, the finished piece carries a sense of depth.
The works on view were drawn on a tablet device and output as silkscreens. They were offered in an edition of 20.
The exhibition is confirmed to travel to Osaka, and a further exhibition with entirely new work is reportedly planned for 2021. I’ll be watching AICON’s practice closely from here on.
