Saya Mimura
“KUA ANNUAL,” the recurring in-house selected exhibition of Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design).
For 2021, even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the show began with a preview exhibition open only to invited guests.
Among the 17 participating individuals and groups selected from approximately 150 students, we took particular note of the works by Saya Mimura.
Saya Mimura is a first-year master’s student at Kyoto University of the Arts. She preserves everyday scenery and phenomena through drawing and photography, and builds up distinctive works using what she calls “mixed technique” — combining silkscreen, painting, and surface treatments.
At “KUA ANNUAL 2021,” two large-scale works reaching up to 250 cm in height were on view, drawing the attention of visitors.

She was also participating in a concurrent selected exhibition titled “Cross Frontier” (venue: Wacoal Study Hall Kyoto).
The composition and the handling of empty space are compelling, and the quality of the silkscreened lines shines through.
Also striking is the way the texture shifts across a single work through the use of different materials.
Saya Mimura continues her practice while advancing research into technique, and her future activity is something we will be watching closely.
