Kotao Tomozawa “caché”
We visited Kotao Tomozawa’s solo exhibition “caché.” The venue was tagboat gallery.
Held just over two months after her most recent solo show, this exhibition marks another moment in what has been a period of especially vigorous activity for the artist, including group exhibitions.

This exhibition centered on major large-scale works including a 100-go (F100 canvas size) piece.
[CONCEPT]
In making my paintings, I do something very simple: I paint what is actually happening.
I pour slime over my own face and onto dolls, and paint by drawing on memories felt at the level of mucous membrane — memories that are mine alone — together with the peculiar “slick warmth” that arises somewhere apart from my clear consciousness.
The one second of ever-flowing slime that I have cut out is a moment that will never return, one that exists nowhere else — belonging only to that instant.
“Caché” means “hidden.”
We slice up the world through our eyes and consciousness and give it our own shapes, but I believe that a hidden myth resides in each and every one of those pixels.

We hear that on opening day some 130 collectors entered a lottery for the eight works offered for sale.
Kotao Tomozawa is currently a third-year undergraduate at Tokyo University of the Arts. Her practice remains highly active, with many exhibitions scheduled ahead.
