“You know who I am.”

You know who I am.

What is the “consciousness” that human beings possess?

Why does the world exist?

Why was I born?

These are things I took for granted as a child. When did I stop thinking about them?

I make my works out of others (society) and the small, everyday incidents of daily life.

Remembering things I had forgotten is quite difficult,

but through, say, a scent, I can recall a particular place, a specific person, an event.

These “instant” moments are precious connections between me and myself, and things I want to note down.

And from the ordinary days I have lived and the colors and air I have felt,

within the transposed matter of paint, the trace of the brush, and the passage of time, the world (the work) is completed only when a viewer is present.

At some point, the figure I draw ceases to be “me,” and, changing its appearance and shape, comes to exist within everyone.

An “I” who is nobody in particular, and a “you.”

The story (the everyday) known only to me leaves the artist’s hand and becomes, uniquely, your own original.

Sales have been strong, and Fukami is one of the most talked-about young artists of the moment.
I look forward to seeing where her practice goes from here.
