Who is Ayako Rokkaku — the Japanese Female Artist Drawing International Attention?

Ayako Rokkaku (born 1982 in Chiba Prefecture) is a self-taught artist who leapt into the spotlight in 2006 when she received the Scout Prize at “Geisai #9 Art Fair,” organized by Takashi Murakami. Interest in her work has grown rapidly, and she enjoys enormous popularity, particularly among Asian collectors. Most recently, a painting sold at Christie’s in May 2022 for USD 1.3 million (roughly 180 million yen at the November 2022 rate), setting a new record for her work.

She applies paint directly onto various supports — including torn cardboard and used Louis Vuitton suitcases — and creates her works using her own hands rather than brushes or pens. Her paintings are innocent, imaginative, and dreamlike. Rokkaku is also known for a naive style featuring manga-inspired figures that reach back to the freedom of childhood. Her work has a strong connection to Japanese “Kawaii” culture. Today, “Kawaii” has become an important concept with global currency, encompassing a broad cultural aesthetic that extends from characters like Hello Kitty to streetwear.

Ayako Rokkaku commented:
“I am very pleased to be able to collaborate with Avant Arte on this project. I am very much looking forward to sharing my process with people around the world through a live painting in such a wonderful venue, and to meeting many new people through this new print edition!”

Avant Arte is a creative marketplace that aims to make art more accessible to a new generation. Collaborating with leading contemporary artists — from Tau Lewis and James Jean to Tomokazu Matsuyama and Yuichi Hirako — the platform produces editions across sculpture, NFTs, and hand-finished screen prints.
The core purpose of this project is to deliver a high-quality print at an accessible price to everyone who genuinely wants her work. Even those new to art collecting are more than welcome. First, why not tune in to enjoy the live painting broadcast!
