Suzuka Toyoda “zapping”
I visited Suzuka Toyoda’s solo exhibition “zapping.”

Taking as my subject any and every phenomenon I happen to come across — a single frame from an image or video streaming across social media, and so on — I use those records as clues to explore “the strangeness of our being here as if it were natural, and the presence of another ‘us’ who witnesses it.” What was seen through someone else’s eyes and what I saw with my own are lined up on equal footing; I trace, hide, and reshape the projected surfaces as I paint. The final image drifts from and returns to its starting point, becoming something else altogether — yet I still know for certain that the figures were once there. Like flipping through channels and watching a few different scenes, or gazing at a landscape as it slowly shifts, I want to keep observing where we are headed.
