Kresiah Mukwazhi “Ndakangavara”
A solo exhibition by Zimbabwean woman artist Kresiah Mukwazhi was on view at kaufmann repetto (Milan).
Kresiah Mukwazhi is a contemporary artist born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1992, and she continues to be based there today. Working across a wide range of media — textile collage, installation, performance, and video — she explores themes of gender, colonialism, patriarchy, and the female body. In particular, through her engagement with the sex-worker community in Harare, she weaves narratives of oppression and recovery, resistance and healing into her work.
Mukwazhi’s works employ feminine adornments as materials — used underwear, brightly colored fabrics, lace, and sequins — questioning how the female body is treated socially and culturally. These materials physically embody women’s experiences and memories, and her practice functions as a form of visual activism.
Mukwazhi’s art fuses visual beauty with social messaging, posing profound questions to the viewer. By speaking on behalf of oppressed women and celebrating their strength and resilience, she has become a significant presence in contemporary art.
