Chisato Tanaka “The Darkness Bearing Eternal Life”

I visited Chisato Tanaka’s solo exhibition “The Darkness Bearing Eternal Life,” held at Bunkamura Box Gallery.

Chisato Tanaka is known for her black backgrounds and distinctive figurative depictions. She also exhibited at Art Central Hong Kong, held just before this solo show.
In Hong Kong she was in attendance together with her child, and perhaps because she now has a small child of her own, my impression was that many of the works on view here featured children as their motif — more so than before.

Chisato Tanaka’s works are painted with a “black” so deep it seems ready to swallow you whole.
A black no other artist can paint — an intense yet gentle black.
She is, I think, a wonderful artist.
