Substratum

Substratum

2026 / Oil painting / 1622 × 3910 × 40 mm

Substratum is the work that draws together everything in this exhibition. It condenses into a single scene the earth and the ocean, the major themes of the show, together with the sense of light that falls on every existence within them. It began as an attempt to imagine a world that might exist somewhere beyond the surface of reality, where the familiar boundaries of land, sky and sea are overturned and coexist in a mingled state. The forms that make up the picture start from fragments of the natural world found in reality: earth and soil, plants and living creatures. Yet they have come away from their original places and their original order, and as they entangle and overlap one another they form a new ecosystem.

The picture reads at once as roots and an ecosystem deep underground and as something recalling the bottom of the sea. It can also feel like a space in which sky and ground have been inverted. Through that ambiguity I wanted to depict a state in which the boundaries by which we divide the world have disappeared. Land and sea, plant and animal, the living and the inanimate: things we take to be separate from one another are in fact the matter that composes a single world, endlessly mixing into other forms and circulating.

Within it, a bird-like form gazes at some point in the picture. Rather than a particular creature, it is a presence contemplating this unfamiliar world, and it sits there like the trace of some spirit dwelling throughout it. Because of that gaze, the landscape changes from a place where discarded fragments have merely gathered into a single organism that senses for itself and is alive and moving.

The title Substratum refers to the stratum that lies beneath the surface, or to the fundamental ground on which an existence is established. What I imagined was another world latent beneath the world we stand on, beyond the visible surface. There the boundaries between beings that had been separated in reality grow loose, and scattered fragments enter into relationships once more. Substratum depicts that moment at the bottom of the world when different beings are united into a single landscape, or the archetype of a world that has not yet been named.

Returning Without Arrival

Returning Without Arrival

2026 / Oil painting / 970 × 970 × 35 mm

Creatures that recall the ocean, like crayfish and fish, appear in the picture, and among them there are also forms that have wings. Surfaces that look like cliffs or rock feel at the same time like the topography of the deep sea, and images of water and of land permeate one another to produce a single indeterminate space.

Beings that would seem to belong to different places gather naturally together here. They appear to move in a single direction and yet never reach any clear destination, circling slowly and drifting within the picture. Several of the forms look as though they are staring at the same point, but what lies at the end of that gaze is never revealed. This subtle sense of direction creates the feeling that an invisible centre exists inside the picture.

Rather than have this landscape settle into a specific place, I wanted it to remain a space that is underwater and a cliff at once, and at the same time belongs completely nowhere. Without it even being clear whether they are swimming through water or moving over land, the creatures pass by one another, gather and scatter again. Fragments that have come from different worlds are placed, for a while, within the same current.

The title Returning Without Arrival suggests a movement that is going back and yet never arrives. For these beings, returning does not necessarily mean going back to a previous place. Perhaps the very process of moving and circulating without end is itself a kind of return. The work depicts the moment when, in a world whose destination has disappeared, different beings sense the same direction and drift around it.

Ripening

Ripening

2026 / Oil painting / 1033 × 970 × 35 mm

Ripening began as an attempt to imagine the moment when something slowly fills from within, ripens and shifts into another state. The forms in the picture bring to mind parts of familiar living things such as plants, fruit, insects and tissue, but none of them is clearly defined as any one object. Different fragments entangle in ways that seem to flow down, to hang, and to grow up through the surface, producing a single unfamiliar ecology.

To ripen is both a process moving toward completion and the moment when, at its fullest state, something is about to pass over into another form. Just as fruit falls after ripening, decays and becomes part of the soil again, in nature maturity and disappearance are not separate events but lie within one cycle. The deep red of the picture and its organic forms are likewise abundant and full of life while also holding something excessive and strange.

The title Ripening points to this intermediate state of change. It is a time in which nothing has fully arrived and nothing has yet vanished, while change continues inside. In this work, life appears less as something existing in a fixed form than as a process of growing, ripening, flowing down and becoming something else again.

The Unfinished Habitat

The Unfinished Habitat

2026 / Oil painting / 727 × 530 × 35 mm each (series of four)

The Unfinished Habitat is a series of four works made by combining non-living fragments found in the human world. Images collected from everyday life, such as buildings and food, the folds of clothing and the surfaces of objects, break away from their original contexts and combine with one another to produce an unfamiliar landscape. Interestingly, this scene composed of human traces appeared instead as something desolate and incomplete, like a crumbling building or a ruin, or like a planet on which life has not yet settled.

Agonising continually between the ideal and the real, I tried to recombine fragments of reality in order to come closer to the ideal scene I longed for. What emerged at the end of that process, however, was not a complete and harmonious world but a landscape in which desolation and vitality strangely coexist. Even within a space that seems to be collapsing and disappearing, something moves ceaselessly and advances toward another possibility. In the end this work remained a single chaotic scene in which longing for the ideal, the incompleteness of reality, disappearance and generation are all entangled at once.

The spheres that appear repeatedly across the four pictures began from the round fragment of an egg yolk. Once removed from its original context, however, the sphere is no longer defined as any one object. It could become an egg or a bead, and it can also be read as a trace of a human being or of life. Unlike the landscape, which appears to be at a standstill, the spheres wander across the pictures and exist like vagrants moving in search of another place. Even within a desolate space, their movement produces a faint animation and a possibility that has not yet disappeared.

In the gallery this work faces Substratum, which is made of fragments of nature. The two works set out from different worlds, the human and the natural, but in the end they exist entangled with one another within a single space. Rather than setting nature and humanity in opposition, they can be seen as two landscapes in which different beings compose the same world and continually affect one another.

Shelter

Shelter

2026 / Oil painting / 530 × 409 × 35 mm

The presences that appear repeatedly in this exhibition set out from different environments and different worlds, yet they enter into relationships with what surrounds them and go on making new forms and new places. Shelter began as an attempt to imagine, within that current, scattered things entangling with one another to form one small world, and trying to hold and protect something inside it.

At the centre of the picture there is a form condensed like a nest, and above it a shape that seems to wrap around it. Rather than a particular creature, it looks like a presence protecting and caring for something within itself. While the rough red surface around it and the tangled lines recall an environment in constant change, the forms at the centre lean on one another and produce one small territory.

The nest here is less a place that is entirely safe or cut off from the outside than something close to a temporary resting place, made imperfectly by drawing together the fragments around it. Different things gather to form a single site, and within it the possibility arises of holding something again and going on living. What protects and what is protected, how far a single life extends and where the environment surrounding it begins, are boundaries that are likewise not clear.

The nest found in nature and the form of the dwelling that human beings make overlap faintly within this scene. Rather than a landscape belonging to either nature or humanity, Shelter holds the primordial image of different beings entering into relationships within the world and making a small territory in which to stay, to hold and to protect.

Holding Light

Holding Light

2026 / Watercolour on buffalo hide / 660 × 870 × 35 mm

Rather than representing light directly, this work attends to the membrane that reveals that light was there. Light in itself is not a substance that can be held in the hand or that has a fixed form. Only at the moment it touches skin, passes through the surface of a plant or reflects off an object do we finally sense its existence. In the end, light always reveals itself through contact with some material.

From that thought, I came to see animal hide as a kind of membrane. Hide was once the surface at the very outside of a living body, taking in the external world of light and air, temperature and humidity directly. Here the hide functions less as a material for representing the skin of a particular animal or emphasising corporeality than as the primordial interface where light, life and the external world were in contact with one another.

On top of it I inscribed fragments gathered from nature, using watercolour, a method that works with water rather than oil. Forms suggesting plants, living things and terrain come away from their original places and their original order to drift across the hide, to overlap, and to seep into one another. These fragments have not yet settled into a single landscape; they remain in the state just before a new nature is formed.

In this work, therefore, the hide is less a picture plane containing a completed world than a membrane briefly holding fragments from before the world was made. On the membrane that once received light, fragments of nature gather and scatter, forming relationships that have not yet been named. Through this I wanted to hold not a finished and ordered nature but the primal state in which light, matter and fragments of life mix together and become a world.
